Upgrade from Vista Home Premium 64bit to Ultimate 64bit

As with most things Microsoft, upgrading from Vista Home Premium 64bit to Ultimate 64bit appeared straightforward.  Not so, say I, without the proper undocumented steps.

The process is supposed to go something like this…

Boot into Home Premium…Insert disk…Install Now…Sit back, relax with a beverage for an hour…Boot into Ultimate…Exclaim, “I am a PC!”

After two failed attempts, both ending with a “Upgrade failed, rolling back changes” and no helpful information,  I began my quest.  The white wizard, Google, found my answer magically sprinkled across several sites.  Now I present what worked for me.  It may be overkill on some steps, but it worked.

First, using Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features, I uninstalled: anything Roxio (which I never use anyway, instead use ImgBurn), Instant Messaging programs (like AIM, Yahoo, etc.), Quicktime and RealPlayer.

Next while still in Programs and Features, click “Turn Windows features on or off.”

TurnFeaturesOnOff

Clearing the following checkmarks, but make sure you document what was checked so that after the upgrade you can re-check it.

Turn off Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

Turn off Remote Differential Compression

Turn off Windows DFS Replication Service

Next, go into Control Panel\Security Center and disable Widows Firewall and Defender.

Next, disable your anti-virus, usually by right-clicking the icon in the System Tray to close the program.

Finally, unplug any attached device like printers, external hard drives, just about anything except your monitor, keyboard, mouse, and internet connection.

Now you can pop in the installation DVD, install, and grab that celebratory beverage because the above worked for you too.
